Do you multitask?

Do the following:

  1. Play your favorite song on full volume.
  2. Switch on the television and switch to some news channel.
  3. Pick up the phone and call your friend.
  4. Solve this:

A bat and a ball together cost $1 and 10 cents. If the bat is a dollar costlier than the ball, find the cost of the ball.

Now, stop doing steps 1, 2, 3 and solve it again.

Did you find it easier? (The answer is 5 cents.)

Eating while working and simultaneously listening to music? Is this increasing your productivity and saving time?

It is degrading your brain.

“Multitasking” means executing more than one tasks simultaneously. But that is for a computer and you are a human. The truth is, there is nothing like multitasking for humans. It is wrongly used for switching between different tasks in a very short period of time.

This switching temporarily changes the way your brain works.

Multitasking is like opening multiple tabs. You can open them but can’t work on all of them simultaneously.

This is because your brain is not wired to actually “execute” multiple tasks simultaneously. When you need to focus your attention on a task and consequently coordinate with other systems, your prefrontal cortex activates. When you divert your attention to two different tasks, this working slows down. So why can’t humans multitask? Simply due to the lack of multiple prefrontal cortexes. A study suggests that multitasking increases reaction time and increases stress.

So why can you listen to music and eat more efficiently than read a book and drive?

It depends on the engagement of the prefrontal cortex and different tasks have different degrees of engagement.

Fun fact: Multitasking is not impossible, however but only 2% of the people can do it.

Freaky fact: Multitasking reduces your IQ as much as a not sleeping an entire night does (almost by ten points). So you can choose between multitasking and becoming dumb OR just evolve.

  1. I think I’m going to enjoy reading your posts while I’m rock-climbing, eating a salami sandwich and thinking about how much I’m going to enjoy waving “Do you multitask?” in front of my kids and saying “I told you so.”
Great name for a blog BTW.
